Looking for space saving stairs?

Space saving stairs, otherwise known as paddle stairs, are designed to maximise floor space in your living area whilst giving you easy access to the various floors in your home. Paddle stairs feature alternating treads, which allow for a sharper pitch than a standard staircase – saving valuable square footage!

All Abbott Wade paddle stairs are expertly constructed in line with current UK building regulations, so they’re guaranteed to be 100 percent safe. Manufactured from the highest quality timber, our space saving stairs will not only free up some room in your home, but will look sleek and stylish, too.

Whilst many people opt for a straight flight of paddle stairs, multiple configurations are possible. You could free up even more of your floor space by choosing an L or U-shaped arrangement of space saving paddle stairs.

If you have a drop of more than 600mm, you will also need to ensure you have balustrading to avoid the risk of falling. Glass is a perfect option for balustrades for space saving stairs as it allows you to maintain the feeling of open space, whilst still achieving the staircase design that you require. With space-saving stairs, we recommend our 15mm frameless glass panels, which is thicker than the 10mm toughened safety glass we use as standard. When you choose the expert team at Abbott-Wade to install your space saving paddle stairs, you can rest assured knowing that you are in safe hands.

Space saving stairs for loft conversion

One of the most obvious benefits of having a loft conversion is the utilisation of all that dead space. Whilst you’re likely to have given great thought to the décor, lighting, window placement and furniture layout, how you will actually access the room is often something of an afterthought.

A loft staircase is not only a practical consideration – it can also be a stylish design feature. However, you may be concerned about losing space in your bedrooms or on your landing to make room for your new staircase.

Choosing space saving stairs for your loft conversion is the perfect solution. These paddle stairs not only mean that you’ll lose the absolute minimum of square footage in your upstairs rooms to your new staircase, but the open design also means that there will be plenty of light flow, keeping your space feeling light and airy.

How to use paddle stairs

To safely use paddle stairs, the user must ascend or descend in line with the design of each tread. This is because part of the tread is cut away in order to save space.

It’s natural to subconsciously start to ascend or descend on the same foot, and this choice will be different for each person. For your ease of use, we’ll take this into account when designing your paddle stairs.

Space Saving Stairs FAQs

What is the best space saving staircase?

The answer to this question depends on the layout of your home and your personal preferences. Here at Abbott-Wade, we’re able to offer many bespoke space saving staircases, so you can choose the elements that feel right for your home.

Over our many years as one of the nation’s most trusted staircase companies, we have designed and installed many space saving staircase solutions in buildings all over the country. It’s safe to say we know a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t!

If you really want to maximise the space saving potential of your staircase, then you may want to think about incorporating it into your wall. This way, you can keep the measurements small whilst still benefitting from all that a standard staircase has to offer.

A spiral staircase (or helical staircase) could be the space saving option for you if you love simple, contemporary designs. Contrary to what you might think, a spiral staircase actually takes up far less room than a standard one, as the method of construction means that it builds on top of itself. Browse our gallery to see some of our space saving spiral staircases.   A narrow, yet strong and sturdy paddle staircase is a very practical option, and with the right elements incorporated, can also look extremely modern and stylish. This is particularly the case here at Abbott Wade, as we will still afford you the level of customisation that you would have with any of our standard staircases.

Will space saving stairs meet building regulations?

Of course, the main aim of space saving stairs is to do just that! This makes sure that you’re able to best utilise your area in a way that you can be comfortable with. However, it’s important to ensure that your space saving staircase is safe to use. It’s therefore imperative that the staircase installation team you choose for your renovation complies with all current UK building regulations.

Here at Abbott Wade, we have the knowledge and experience to make certain that your new space saving staircase not only looks great and is easy to use but is 100 percent safe. The pitch of your staircase (the angle at which the nosing of your step meets the floor at the bottom of your stairs) will be carefully calculated by our experts. We’ll ensure that this angle is no more than 42°, to be in keeping with building regulations.

If you have any questions about building regulations for space saving staircases, contact our team by filling in the online contact form and we’ll get back to you shortly.

What is the minimum space for a space saving staircase?

Even though you’re looking to use as little floor space as possible in the construction of your space saving staircase, you will want to make sure that it is comfortable and safe to use at all times.

For example, if you use too little space on the width of your treads, you could risk falling over due to a lack of room to climb. Not only this, but if your stairs are too steep, then you could also lose your balance and fall a significant height to the floor below, injuring yourself in the process.

The truth is that there are no minimum heights and widths for your staircase, just a maximum angle for the pitch of 42°. However, a sensible judgement call will have to be made, to make sure that your space saving staircase is suitable for the layout of your home and your lifestyle.

What are the best space saving stairs for loft conversions?

For loft conversions, the best space saving stairs are usually either helical staircases, otherwise known as spiral staircases, or paddle stairs.

It’s important to remember that under UK building regulations, paddle stairs can only be used if the room isn’t going to be in constant use.

So, if your loft conversion will be a frequently used bedroom, then a helical staircase may be a better option.
