Classic Stairs

We use the term ‘classic stairs’ to refer to timber staircases that are made with traditional hardwood. These beautiful, traditional staircases are most often finished with curved stringers, along with creatively decorated handrails and spindles.

Some people have a preconceived idea that traditional wooden staircases are outdated, but with the huge range of design possibilities available, a classic staircase could be the perfect fit for your home.

Classic stairs work brilliantly if you’re going for a rustic look or are renovating your home with a traditional feel. All our classic stairs are custom made for each individual customer, taking into account their preferences, home layout and lifestyle.

Our classic staircase designs come with a choice of handrail profiles such as turned, straight and stop-chamfered newel posts with pyramid or ball newel caps. Abbott-Wade traditional staircases are also available to customise with turned spindles or fluted posts, a small detail that could massively improve the look of your classic staircase design.

Why choose Abbott Wade for classic staircase design?

Classic Staircase FAQs

How much does a classic staircase cost?

The cost of a classic staircase will vary considerably depending upon several factors. Are you looking for new balustrades and treads, or would you simply like your spindles replaced? How many flights of stairs do you have, and how many individual steps are there in each? You’ll also have to decide on the timber you’d like to be used for your classic staircase renovation, with some types of wood costing more than others. Additionally, we’ll need to factor in the cost of labour, as bigger jobs will obviously take longer. When you get in touch with our experts, we’ll visit your property to take measurements and discuss your preferences, before providing you with an accurate cost for your classic staircase. To get a free, no-obligation quote, simply give our friendly team a call on 01744 634442. Alternatively, you can fill in our online contact form and we’ll be in touch shortly.

Can you just replace the spindles?

If there is no damage to your classic staircase, but your old spindles are looking worn out, we can simply replace them. There are lots of beautiful and timeless options to choose from, including fluted or turned wooden spindles and classic painted balustrades. Alternatively, if you’d like to add a modern twist to your classic staircase, we could replace your old wooden spindles with forged steel or glass spindles, or even frameless glass panels. Replacing the balustrades on a classic staircase can make a massive difference to the aesthetics of your home. If you’d like a free, no-obligation quote for renovating a classic staircase by replacing worn-out spindles, get in touch with the team at Abbott Wade today. Either give us a call on 01744 634442 or fill in our online contact form and one of our knowledgeable and friendly classic staircase specialists will get back to you as soon as possible.

What are the building regulations for classic staircases?

The building regulations for classic staircases are the same as for all other staircases in the UK. The horizontal distance between each step, known as the ‘going’, must be a minimum of 220mm and a maximum of 300mm. The vertical distance between the top of one tread and the next is called the ‘rise’. This must be a minimum distance of 150mm and a maximum of 220mm. There’s also a maximum angle for the pitch of your staircase, which is 42°. Even when all these building regulations are met, however, some staircase layouts won’t be suitable for every home and lifestyle.  This means that sensible judgement calls will have to be made when designing your new classic staircase. With over 20 years of experience in installing and renovating classic staircases in the UK, Abbott Wade has the knowledge and skills to ensure that your stairs not only comply with current UK building regulations, but transform the aesthetics of your home, giving your visitors a real ‘wow’ factor. If you have any questions about building regulations for classic staircases, give our team a call on 01744 634442 or fill in our online contact form and we will get back to you shortly.
