Here’s a little more information about each of these finishes.

Silver metal spindles

Probably the first colour that comes to mind when you think of steel spindles is silver. Our silver metal staircase spindles pair beautifully with any style of décor, and look particularly stunning when combined with painted white or black timber.

You don’t need to just stop at the spindles when incorporating steel into your staircase design though. We also have silver metal newel caps, end caps, handrails, and brackets if you’d like to go for an all-out metal look. Depending on the style of silver metal staircase you choose, this could look industrial or contemporary. Take a look at our gallery photos for inspiration.

Black metal spindles

One of the most popular colours for our forged steel spindles is black. Their classic and bold styling makes our black metal spindles the perfect way to finish off your dream staircase project. There are many designs of black steel spindles to choose from, including both traditional and contemporary styles.

In additional to our black metal spindles, we have black metal newel caps and end caps, as well as black handrails and brackets. So, whether you’d like to combine a wooden staircase with black steel spindles, or opt to have the entire staircase made from metal, the choice is yours.

Gold metal spindles

Our painted gold steel spindles work particularly well when paired with oak handrails and stair treads.

Complementing any style of décor, from neutral through to bold, these matt gold spindles will look striking in any home.

As with the black and silver options, in addition to gold metal spindles, we also have a range of gold newel caps, end caps, gold handrails and brackets for you to choose from.

Forged Steel Spindles FAQs

What are the benefits of metal spindles for stairs?

There are many benefits to having steel spindles in your staircase design, not least that steel requires less maintenance than wood and is much harder to damage than glass. Forged steel is extremely strong, absorbing stress and impacts without warping or bending. With steel spindles, your staircase will remain sturdy for many years.

Another advantage of metal spindles is that they can be forged in designs that can’t be as easily achieved with other materials. Steel spindles are super versatile when it comes to style choices, but also cost-effective – so you can create a stylish custom staircase even on a smaller budget. Since steel spindles are often thinner than wooden ones, they also let more light pass between them.

Steel spindles are also easy to install. At Abbott-Wade, we pre-drill the rails with exact spacings to ensure that they slot in perfectly, then secure them in place for safety and durability. Less fuss means a faster installation, especially if you’re using existing newel posts for a refurbishment. Metal spindles are a good choice for both indoor and outdoor staircases.

Which steel baluster style should I choose?

There are so many possibilities when it comes to mixing and matching staircase materials that the sky really is the limit for steel spindles. Choosing a unique spindle design is a sure-fire way to upgrade a staircase and make it more stylish, whether you stick with a classic elegant style or a more modern and artistic interpretation.

You could turn a traditional wooden staircase into something more visually interesting by interspacing forged steel spindles with a stand-out basket design, or add supportive steel elements to a glass staircase so it’s not too plain. Even if you go for steel spindles all the way along your stairs, you can still interspace different styles for a truly unique look.

How many stair spindles do I need?

As a general rule, it’s a good idea to have two steel spindles for every tread. So, you can multiply the number of steps in your staircase by two to get a basic figure. However, you might prefer to space them out a bit more. It really depends on what you like the look of.

You should be able to install your spindles however you like, as long as it’s in line with building regulations. These currently state that spindles should not allow a sphere with a 100mm diameter to fit between them for safety reasons, meaning gaps can be a maximum of 99mm.

Symmetry is more pleasing to the eye than asymmetry, so spindles should generally be spaced out evenly, with an equal distance between each one. If you’re alternating the design for interspaced spindles, bear in mind that the individual thicknesses could affect the spacing.

Can you replace a broken steel spindle?

As steel spindles are so durable, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever need to replace one. However, if you need to then it is possible to replace just one broken steel spindle on your staircase. Having said this, you may wish to replace all the spindles to ensure a perfect match.

If you currently have wooden spindles and they are broken or just looking a bit dated, then replacing them with forged steel spindles can instantly revamp your staircase, adding a touch of contemporary class to any home.

If you have any questions about replacing certain elements of your staircase, get in touch with our knowledgeable and friendly team.

What colour can I choose for my forged steel spindles?

Whilst silver may be the first colour that comes to mind when you think of steel staircase spindles, Abbott Wade supply and install steel spindles in silver, black and gold finishes.

Steel spindles painted black can provide a crisp contrast against white painted stairs, while silver spindles look good with most colour schemes. You could even have them painted gold to create the look of a luxury staircase.

Depending on the style of spindle you choose, and the materials you combine for your staircase renovation, the resulting look could be traditional, industrial, or contemporary.
