There was a time that Colin would travel the length and breadth of the country visiting clients but these days he doesn’t like to stray too far away from his grandchildren and splits his time between the Abbott-Wade office and visiting customers. Colin visit clients clients close to home in neighbouring Oldham and Stockport as well as around South Manchester and North Cheshire towns like Wilmslow, Macclesfield & Poynton.

What should clients know about you?

‘Black coffee or a milky tea and I’ll happily talk about stairs for hours.’

If you could give a client wanting a new staircase one piece of advice – what would it be?

‘Do your research on any company you’re planning on working with. You’ve worked hard for your money so you need to know you’re in safe hands before parting with it. Look for a company who work with employed fitters like Abbott-Wade and not subcontractors.’

Experience: 10+ Years in Staircases

Colin has spent over ten years specialising in staircase design, originally for furniture giant Neville Johnson when they moved into the staircase sector and later joining the Abbott-Wade family.

His earlier career was frequently spent traveling as a European Sales Manager in the Marine Industry and then 23 years as a Regional Manager for an insurance company where he learned a lot about people at a personal level and things which matter most them; their families and their homes.

Why a career in staircases? What’s all the fuss about?

I’ve always loved working with wonderful timbers like oak and walnut – I’m secretly a frustrated joiner. I genuinely love seeing something created that transforms a room. It’s very satisfying’  

Why the move to Abbott-Wade?

‘I’d crossed paths with the Mike Wade and Craig Abbott on a couple of occasions and liked their approach. They’d already been in the industry for a number of years already at this point but still had a fresh approach to their work. They had an honest pricing structure and were more versatile in what they could offer to their clients which selling staircases easier and more rewarding because of their non-corporate approach and personalised service.’

Which staircase are you most proud of?

‘There have many over the years, from the grand staircases you’d expect in places like Alderly Edge & Lymm to technically tricky projects in West Yorkshire. My favourite was several years ago when I visited a client in Newark with a tricky staircase project. We took out several stud walls and installed a beautiful new oak and glass staircase. Since then we’ve visited 3 more houses on the same street and fitted embedded glass, frameless glass and spindles. Four very similar homes with four very different staircases and all sold on customer recommendation!’

Proudest Abbott-Wade Memory?

‘In early 2019 I suffered a Stroke. It was a very difficult time for myself and my family. The Abbott-Wade team rallied around us and over 20 members of the team ran a 10km Military Assault Course near Knutsford to raise money for the Stroke Association.’

Who inspires you?

‘Without wanting to sound cheesy, I find our company founders Craig & Mike an inspiration. They’ve built up a fantastic ethical family business from nothing. They treat their clients and staff with respect which is increasingly rare these days.’

Who is on your music playlist when visiting clients?

‘I like middle-of-the-road, easy listening music like Neil Diamond but I also like some newer music like Ed Sheeran. If I’m being honest it nice to have a break from the Disney songs which the grandchildren insist on us listening to.

What’s your secret talent that no one knows about?

‘I’m a dab-hand at technical drawing, I quite enjoy it too!’
