The staircase is one of the most prominent features of your home.

It serves the practical function of allowing you to move between the rooms upstairs and downstairs whilst making a stunning focal point.

As it’s likely to be the first thing guests will spot when they step over the threshold, you don’t want your staircase to be damaged, outdated or shabby looking.

If your treads, risers, spindles and handrails are damaged or wobbly, it’s worth swapping them for new stair parts to ensure maximum safety for your household.

Believe it or not, a few simple tweaks can dramatically improve the look of a tired staircase – bringing it back up to date without costing you an arm and a leg!

Allow the staircase specialists here at Abbott-Wade to talk you through some of our favourite modern staircase ideas.

6 ways to transform your staircase on a budget

1.    Replace the handrail

Just because you want to transform the look in your hallway, it doesn’t mean you need to replace your existing staircase.

Something as simple as removing the handrail and swapping it for a new one could give your tired staircase a new look – saving you the expense and disruption that comes with a full renovation.

Available in various shapes, sizes and materials, you’re bound to find a design that complements your interior décor.

What’s more, primed and pre-finished stair rail options can speed up the installation process, allowing you to elevate your home quickly and affordably.

2.    Add a lick of paint to your staircase

Got an old tin of paint knocking about at home? Why not kill two birds with one stone and use it up to give your stairs a new lease of life?

You could paint all stair parts in the same colour to ensure a consistent finish or paint the treads, risers, spindles and newel posts in different colours to create a bold statement. It’s entirely up to you.

However, before you start painting, make sure you sand down any wooden surfaces to remove any preexisting varnish or paint and use a good-quality primer.

We recommend at least two coats of semi-gloss paint, but your stairs may require more or less, depending on your desired look.

3.    Fit a stair runner down the middle

This has to be one of the easiest modern staircase ideas on the list – guaranteed to transform your home almost instantaneously.

Stair runners are a fantastic solution for updating the look of an otherwise bland staircase. They can hide imperfections, too.

Instead of carpeting each tread and riser, along with the top and bottom landings, a stair runner can make a striking statement down the centre of your staircase. They come in a plethora of colours and patterns, meaning you should have no issue finding one you love!

To hold the carpet down – preventing it from lifting and potentially causing people to trip when going up and down the stairs – it’s worth using stair rods. These will also give your stairs a more complete look.

4.    Mix and match materials

What better way to create a unique flight of stairs than mixing stair parts, materials and textures?

A traditional wooden staircase can easily be updated with modern finishes, such as glass panels or chrome spindles, newel caps and handrails.

Alternatively, you could opt for a certain type of wood for the treads and another for the risers. Or choose a lighter-coloured wood for the spindles and a darker shade for the railing.

Either way, playing around with different materials is sure to create a distinctive feature that stands proudly in the centre of your home.

5.    Install a glass balustrade

Depending on how far your budget will stretch, you may consider incorporating a glass balustrade into the design of your staircase – replacing traditional spindles.

A glass balustrade can be paired with virtually any other material to provide contrast, which is perfect if you want to give your property a more contemporary look and feel.

If your hallway is particularly dark and enclosed, glass is an excellent choice. It will allow natural light to flood into your home and create the illusion that it’s much bigger than it actually is.

6.    Create a cosy snug under the stairs

A quick Google search and you won’t be short of modern staircase ideas, that’s for sure!

However, one of our all-time favourites has to be utilising the space under the stairs as a cosy seating area. Perfect for enjoying some alone time after a hectic day or snuggling up with the kids and reading a story together.

The reason why we love this idea so much is that it doesn’t have to break the bank. All you need are a few large bean bags and plenty of throws and blankets.

If you’ve got the space to do so, you could squeeze in a lovely little loveseat and drape some fairy lights along the wall.
