The staircase is an often overlooked element in interior design.

However, there are lots of things you can do to turn stairs into a stunning architectural feature– making for an eye-catching focal point in your home.

Allow the staircase specialists, here at Abbott-Wade, to share some of the best (and our favourite!) modern staircase ideas in 2023.

1.    A stylish combination of materials

Using an elegant mix of materials and bringing together different shapes, colours and textures will create a stylish contrast.

For example, combining wooden treads and risers with metal edging and railings will have a striking impact – giving your home a bold yet slightly industrial look.

A more contemporary option would be to use glass panels instead of wooden or metallic spindles. These not only look great paired with other materials, but they enhance natural light, create a feeling of openness, and allow your staircase to be appreciated from every angle.

2.    Floating stairs

If your interior décor is modern and minimalist, or your home is smaller than most, a floating staircase is sure to add a touch of magic and visual appeal.

Although it’s been around for quite some time, this is still one of our all-time favourite modern staircase ideas at Abbott-Wade.

Unlike conventional staircases, the risers don’t rest on wall studs. Instead, they are attached to metal structures inside the walls or a concealed frame beneath the floor. As the risers are left uncovered, it creates the illusion that the staircase is floating, which we love!

3.    Colourful designs

Increasingly more people are opting to inject some colour into their homes in 2023, and what better place to start than with the staircase?

A simple yet effective way to liven up an otherwise drab staircase is to choose a brightly-coloured stair carpet or a patterned runner. Alternatively, a cheaper option would be to paint the stair parts – either all in the same colour for a consistent look or different shades to make a fun yet stylish statement.

4.    White-washed timber

Modern staircase ideas in 2023 focus on an impactful use of colour, but the trend for all-white interiors looks to be continuing this year, too.

White-washed timber that’s beautifully carved with a smooth, flowing edge will create a clean, friendly, casual aesthetic in your hallway. It helps to provide a more peaceful ambience in your home as well.

Although white-washed timber staircases look great alongside white walls, nothing is stopping you from painting the walls a different colour. Or you may wish to go down the route of adopting a monochrome colour scheme – painting the handrail and newel posts black and leaving the treads, risers and spindles white.

5.    Smart staircase lighting

A well-lit staircase not only enhances safety by allowing you to watch your footing as you walk up and down the stairs, but it can also illuminate your staircase and show it off in the best light.

In 2023, we’ve already started to see a rise in the popularity of motion sensors that light up the steps automatically and sleek LED strip lighting.

Another great way to lighten up a dark stairwell would be to hang a pendant light or chandelier from the ceiling above or to place a mirror on one of the walls to help bounce the light and create the illusion of a brighter hall.
