Is your staircase looking a little worse for wear?

Maybe it’s way behind the times, and you’re searching for a way to bring it back to the 21st century without breaking the bank?

As the structural heart of your hallway, the way your stairs look is incredibly important, and helps set the tone for the rest of your home.

9 times out of 10, you won’t need to rip everything out and start from scratch, and all you may need to breathe some life back into your apples and pears is a few new parts – like treads and risers, or spindles and handrails – or a fresh lick of paint.

But how much will this cost you?

Here, our staircase specialists at Abbott-Wade reveal how much your staircase renovation could cost you.

Why should I renovate my staircase?

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to revive your old staircase, a simple renovation is sure to do the trick.

Your staircase is often the first thing guests see when they walk through the front door, and it sets the tone for the rest of your home.

Not only does it increase aesthetic appeal, but it can also help boost the value of your property, which is great news if you’re getting your house ready to put back on the market!

What determines the cost of a staircase renovation?

Many different things determine the cost of a staircase renovation, including:

The type of staircase you have

The type of staircase you have is just one of the things that determines the overall cost of your staircase renovation.

Different shapes include:

  • Straight – these are the simplest and most common types of staircases, consisting of treads and risers that go straight up.
  • L-shaped – this type of staircase consists of two straight staircases joined at a right angle.
  • U-shaped staircase – these staircases comprise two sets of stairs joined by a landing space in the middle.
  • Spiral – spiral staircases consist of a central pole and a series of treads that wind around it – a great option for homes with limited space.

More complex shapes are more expensive to build as they require more materials and take longer to construct.

Labour costs

Another thing that makes up a significant portion of the price of your staircase renovation is the labour costs.

Of course, how expensive this will be depends on the tradespeople you hire and the complexity of the project, but, on average you can expect to pay:

  • Removal of the old staircase – £200-£400
  • Installation of the new staircase – £500-£2,000
  • Sanding and finishing the staircase – £300-£1,000

Materials

Of course, some materials are more expensive than others, so if you’ve got a budget to stick to, you’ll need to consider your options carefully.

Glass and hardwood staircases are the most expensive and will set you back anywhere between £1,000 and £3,000.

However, you don’t need to replace the entirety of your current staircase to achieve a whole new look –  you can repaint, re-stain, or invest in a new carpet or runner to make an impact for a fraction of the price.

Other costs

If you’re planning a major structural change, you may need to seek planning permission and building regulations approval.

Many people may not realise that this comes at a cost, and typically, you’ll have to pay £150-£300 for each.

You may also need to hire a skip to keep all of your waste, which, on average, costs £100-£300 per week.
