Oak and glass are two of the most popular materials used in modern staircase designs.
They each look great by themselves, but pairing them together can help you create a unique aesthetic.
They truly are a match made in heaven – but how exactly can you couple them up in your staircase design?
In this post, our experts at Abbott-Wade share their favourite oak glass staircase design ideas you can use for inspiration!
1. Oak steps with a glass balustrade
The term balustrade refers to the combination of the handrail, spindles, baserails, and newel posts.
Many people choose to replace these components with a single glass panel, or a series of glass panels.
This option is ideal if you’re going for more of a minimalist look, and it allows much more natural light to flood through your hallways – making them feel much brighter and bigger.
2. Floating oak treads with glass railings
Floating treads are on the rise, thanks to their versatility, limited maintenance requirements, and space-saving abilities (among other benefits).
When combined with glass panels and an oak handrail, you’re guaranteed a stunningly sleek look – perfect if you’re after a more modern option.
3. Oak handrail with clamped glass panels
For those in need of a more budget-friendly staircase upgrade, getting rid of your old oak spindles and replacing them with glass panels is the way to go.
Not only will the glass panels make your space feel much larger and lighter, but you can also choose your clamps to match the rest of the fixtures in your home, creating a satisfying cohesion throughout.
Finally, to complete the rest of your staircase renovation, spruce up the rest of your oak staircase components – sanding them down and applying a fresh coat of varnish – so that they look as good as new, and don’t take away from your lovely new clamped glass panels.
4. Oak staircase with glass spindles
If you’re looking for something a little more unique than standard glass panels, glass spindles are something to consider.
Glass spindles are a stunning take on the traditional staircase feature – instead of using larger panels, we use smaller individual panes of glass to create a chic, contemporary vibe.
These panes of glass are embedded in your handrail, so there’s no need for metal brackets or other fixings, which means you can enjoy a stunning, seamless design.
5. Oak balustrade with glass risers
Replacing your oak risers with glass alternatives is also another cheap, yet cheerful, way to show your staircase some TLC, and it’s a surefire way to make a good first impression on your guests.
A stair riser is the vertical space between each step, which can be left open or closed depending on your preference.
However, if you can’t come to a decision, or you love the look of open risers but feel they would compromise your family’s safety, glass is an excellent alternative, which still allows for unrestricted views and light to flow effortlessly through your home.
