Traditional staircases by Abbott-Wade

Our traditional staircases are crafted from high-quality hardwood, offering a timeless alternative to more contemporary designs. Often featuring curved stringers, decorative spindles, and detailed handrails, a traditional staircase brings character and balance to both period properties and classically styled homes.

A traditional wooden staircase doesn’t have to feel dated. With a wide range of design options available, from a traditional oak staircase to more intricate detailing, a classic staircase design can be tailored to suit your space. Whether you’re restoring original features or creating a bespoke classic staircase from scratch, each design is made to complement your home’s layout and style.

Handrail profiles include turned or straight designs, paired with stop-chamfered newel posts and pyramid or ball caps. Details such as feature steps, turned spindles, fluted posts, or a classic staircase railing allow you to refine the final look, ensuring your traditional staircase feels considered, proportioned, and entirely your own.

    Classic Staircase FAQs

How much does a classic staircase cost?

The cost of a classic staircase varies depending on the scale of work and the materials used. Pricing is influenced by whether you’re upgrading elements such as spindles and handrails or installing a full traditional staircase, as well as the number of flights, steps, and timber choice.

A traditional wooden staircase or traditional oak staircase may vary in cost depending on design detail and finish. As every bespoke classic staircase is tailored to the property, Abbott-Wade provides accurate pricing following a site visit and consultation.

Can you just replace the spindles?

Yes. If the structure of your classic staircase is in good condition, spindles can be replaced without the need for a full renovation. Options include traditional turned or fluted wooden spindles, painted balustrades, or updates such as steel or glass elements. Replacing spindles or a classic staircase railing is a simple way to refresh a classic staircase design while preserving its traditional character.

What are the building regulations for classic staircases?

A classic staircase must meet the same UK building regulations as any traditional staircase. This includes a going between 220mm and 300mm, a rise between 150mm and 220mm, and a maximum pitch of 42°.

While compliance is essential, layout and usability are equally important. With extensive experience designing and installing traditional wooden staircases, Abbott-Wade ensures every classic staircase design meets regulations while fitting seamlessly within your home.
