In a family home, it’s likely that you’re going to be living over multiple floors, with upstairs bedrooms for both kids and parents. If this is the case, a staircase will be present – but is it really optimised for family use the best it could be? At Abbott-Wade, we have helped many customers with families wanting to incorporate child-friendly staircase design.
So, with the wealth of industry expertise at our disposal, we thought we would show off some staircase ideas that parents can use today!
Make sure they’re safe
First and foremost, safety is of vital importance when it comes to staircases. Whichever building they are situated in, commercial or domestic, staircases should always be built and maintained with safety in mind.
If you have a busy family home, the element of safety is especially important when excitable young children are around! Be sure to keep up with the basics, such as keeping the staircase tidy. This prevents anyone, not just your kids, from tripping over rogue items that may cause injury.
You may also want to invest in a high-quality stair gate to position at the top and bottom of your stairs. This will prevent toddlers and young children from accessing them, as they can become a dangerous area of the home if not used correctly.
Get creative
One of the best experiences in life is activities with your family, there’s no disputing that! So why not get the family involved in making your staircase an appealing, inclusive part of your home? We’re not saying let the kids loose on painting your wood staircase (unless you want to!) but maybe you could all decide on some artwork or ornaments that can fit nicely in and around your staircase area.
You may also use some pieces that your children have created from school or arts and crafts club to show that you are proud of their work. Regardless of what you decide to add, subtle touches like this are sure to keep the family together and ensure that your children remain captivated by their surroundings, no matter how young or old they may be.
Allow for comfort
Another way of making sure that your staircase is suitable for both adults and children is by making it a comfortable place to be! As we well know, it often makes more sense to walk around barefoot in your home rather than in socks. So, by utilising carpet on your staircase, not only are you making it an attractive aspect of your home, but you are also keeping it much more comfortable for those on the younger side who find themselves using both their hands and feet to ascend.
