Have you ever assumed that there must be a herd of elephants descending your staircase, only to realise that it is, in fact, your partner or child? Then read on, as carpeted stairs are definitely the best way to end the infernal racket!
There are, of course, many other benefits to modern carpeted stairs, aside from noise reduction.
Stylish and welcoming hall and stair carpets can transform your entrance space. Not only will modern carpeted stairs elevate your home’s aesthetics, but they will ensure that your staircase is warm and comfortable underfoot.
In this blog, we’ve collected some of our favourite ideas for modern carpeted stairs.
Adding texture with modern carpeted stairs
Hall and stair carpets are a great way to add texture to your home’s entrance area. Modern carpeted stairs made from plant fibres provide a textural contrast to smooth, painted walls. The rustic look of these types of carpet can offer a more casual appearance than wool carpets tend to.
Another benefit of hall and stair carpets made from plant fibres, such as sisal or coir, is that they are much more durable than those made from wool. As hallways and staircases are often the areas of your home that receive the most foot traffic, this advantage is not to be overlooked.
We don’t recommend opting for hall and stair carpets with very high pile. Whilst they may look luxurious, they can be a trip hazard – obviously not the best idea for use on a staircase.
Striped hall and stair carpets to maximise your space
Bright and bold patterns work best in areas of your home that you pass through, rather than spend a great deal of time in.
A colourful, striped hall and stair carpet will provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors to your home.
Striped carpets not only add visual interest to your hallways, but provide a clever way of making your space appear longer or wider. The stripes should run in the direction that you’re trying to make appear larger.
If you’re going for striped hall and stair carpets, it’s a good idea to keep your walls plain and neutral. Too much colour and pattern on your walls and flooring can look overly busy.
Style your hallways from the floor up, choosing accessories to match the colours of your striped stair carpet. For example, picture frames in coordinating colours can look amazing when dotted along neutral walls.
Carpet runner for stairs – the best of both worlds
Found the perfect hall and stair carpet but want to leave some of your beautiful new wooden staircase on show?
A stair runner will not only enhance the aesthetics of your hallways, but will provide improved grip – great for those with young children or pets.
There are two installation options for stair runners:
- A waterfall carpet runner for stairs offers a more casual style, draping over the nose of one step and falling to the next, without being secured to the riser.
- Hollywood stair runner installation, on the other hand, provides a more ‘finished’ look. The stair runner wraps around the nose of the tread and is snugly secured to the riser.
The installation option you choose will depend on the pattern of the carpet and the overall look you’re going for. Some carpet runners for stairs look better with waterfall installations (for example those with intricate patterns) whilst others are more suited to the Hollywood look.
