World Book Day

classic-winnie-the-pooh-32_1780x2406A member of our office team worked as a primary school teacher prior to joining Abbott-Wade and has fond memories of dressing up in school each World Book Day. As a family business, we love to celebrate World Book Day too (although we aren’t sure how our customers would feel if they found a team of carpenters dressed as Where’s Wally and Harry Potter installing their staircases). Instead, we thought we’d share a relevant poem by Winnie the Pooh author AA Milne from his 1924 collection ‘When We Were Very Young’:

New Premises 2017

At Abbott-Wade we’re always looking to the future. It’s part of our policy of continuous improvement but goes beyond that. Since our early days back in 1996 we have always made a conscious effort to invest in our staff and our infrastructure: our fleet, our tools, our materials and of course – our building.

We’ve left behind our old home in Lowton but stayed close to our St Helens roots. Our new premises in the beautiful village of Burtonwood on the outskirts of Warrington was famously a major airbase used by both the RAF and American forces during WW2. The site was visited by stars of the day such as Glen Miller & his band, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby & Humphrey Bogart among others as well as high ranking officials such Generals Eisenhower and Patton. It’s even rumoured that Burtonwood the only place in the UK ever visited by Elvis Presley  – though he never actually got off the plane.

The base was finally closed in 1994 and with the arrival of Abbott-Wade in the village, Burtonwood will now be home to a ‘stairbase’ rather than an ‘airbase’ and will accommodate plains not planes in our building fitted out to help our business run more efficiently than ever before.

We love the informal simplicity of Instagram, the online community of over 5,000,000 visual storytellers, but it’s not all teenage girls taking photographs of their lunches. Search the hashtags and you’ll find lots of photos of #homeimprovement, #architecture and even #staircases.

You can follow Abbott-Wade to see not only the glossy photos from our online gallery but also (in this modern world of camera smartphones) some real-time photographs taken by our installations teams and other things of interest to us and hopefully you.

Stair in disbelief: 6 Staircases transformed by mosaics

Since the 3rd millennium BC, mosaics have played a part in decorative art; most famously in the patterns and pictures in Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece.

But not to be left in past, mosaics have been used to turn outdoor staircases into wonderful works of colourful art in cities around the world.

New Flights: Meeting regulations & surpassing expectations

Half Landing with chamfered spindlesWe have 20 years experience installing new staircases and it’s important to make sure that whoever you choose to install your staircase knows exactly what they’re doing. As a trusted family business, all our staircases comply with current UK building regulations. From making sure that the steepness of the stairs (as dictated by the rise and going), complies with Section K1 of the building regulations to constructing balustrades using quality materials, we’re always one step ahead when it comes to ensuring your safety. We also know how to ensure that limitations imposed by the regulations do not need to compromise the design and aesthetics of your staircase.
