Manufacturing a helical staircase

Manufacturing a helical staircase

The precise curves of a helical staircases means the design and manufacturing process requires a level of skill, expertise and precision beyond that needed for a straight staircase. A comprehensive digital site survey is taken using state of the art measuring technology that is accurate to within 80 microns to capture the precise details of any underlying construction.

This is used to create a detailed 3-dimensional digital CAD model by a highly skilled design team to allow for the meticulous manufacture of curved components or a complete bespoke helical staircase. This is achieved by dividing the more complex curves and features into parts and running them through a computer simulation to makesure that each component is correct and accurate. These accurate models allow skilled craftsmen to build a forma (see photo) which duplicates the exact curvature required around which the curved components are built.

Before & After: Changing from spindles to embedded glass

One of the popular trends we have have seen over recent years is customers moving away from traditionally turned spindles in favour of glass. This is largely due to a desire to create a bright contemporary space within the heart of the home but there are practical implications to be considered too. The original staircase (pictured right) was painted white in an effort to lighten the hallway but the transformation to oak and glass adds the warming tones of oak with the open feeling of glass which allows unobstructed light to fill the hallway. The new 10mm toughened  glass panels means there are no gaps between spindles to collect dust and the absence of glass clamps offers a more streamlined look. An added wall handrail makes a further safety feature while the new carpet injects colour with the stripes creating a further illusion of extra space.

Before & After: Changing a solid balustrade with glass

Before & After: Changing a solid balustrade for glass

Staircases come in all shapes and sizes with balustrades made of glass, metal and timber or they can be completely solid made from plasterboard or breeze blocks.

While these solid balustrades serve the purpose of keeping the staircase safe and defined from other spaces within the home, they do so at the detriment of light and airflow.

The transformation made here for Mr Rose (read more) revolutionised the hall, stairs and landing. A compromise was made from a full transition from completely opaque to fully transparent by opting for sandblasted glass. Sandblasted glass allows light to flow through the stairwell but with a translucent quality which maintains privacy by obscuring the sight lines between the upper and lower levels.

Before & After: Replacing Ranch Rails with a Stylish Glass Balustrade

Before & After: Changing ranch rails for a glass balustrade

Interior style trends have changed over the years as society has shifted to many different styles throughout history. While many of us have decided to switch up the pink and green bathroom suites which were once popular “back in the day”, the ranch rail balustrades are a 1970’s design feature which have managed to outstay their welcome for decades and are still a fixture in many modern households. One of the main reasons that are cited for replacing ranch rails other than the dated appearance, is the amount of light which is restricted by the solid wooden planks which span the stairs.
