Before & After: Changing a solid balustrade for glass
While these solid balustrades serve the purpose of keeping the staircase safe and defined from other spaces within the home, they do so at the detriment of light and airflow.
The transformation made here for Mr Rose (read more) revolutionised the hall, stairs and landing. A compromise was made from a full transition from completely opaque to fully transparent by opting for sandblasted glass. Sandblasted glass allows light to flow through the stairwell but with a translucent quality which maintains privacy by obscuring the sight lines between the upper and lower levels.
Replacing a solid balustrade with glass along the stairs makes a huge difference. The installation pictured left also involved replacing a large gallery balustrade which allowed lots more light to pass between the floors making the inside of the home brighter and feel much larger.
Each of the Before & After image blocks on this page are taken before and after a real Abbott-Wade installation from UK homes visited by our installation teams. Some of the images may be taken at different stages of completion with carpets/decoration left unfinished.
