Why a new staircase?

When we moved to our home forty five years ago, my husband and I never liked the existing staircase, we felt that it was very dated. We had a young family at the time so I could never afford to have it replaced. So we kept painting it and saying ‘one day we will have a new staircase installed’.

Inspiration:

I saw the Abbott-Wade brochure and thought the transformations in it were stunning. I had a demonstration of all the various staircase designs and then had the measurements taken. The cost was about what I had envisaged.

Decision making process:

The fact that Abbott-Wade was a family-run company appealed to me and the staff were friendly. One company turned out to be very expensive.

Style choice:

I chose light oak throughout as my flooring is light oak parquet herring bone design. I was glad I did as the result is stunning. Both friends and neighbours have all commented on how beautiful it looks.

End Result:

I only wish I could have afforded it years ago. I absolutely love my new staircase. The whole process took forty eight hours to complete and the workmen were very tidy, clearing away the mess and cleaning up as they went. They were also very friendly.

helical walnut staircase

Sweeping white & walnut curved staircase

Mr & Mrs Currie, Liverpool

Why a new staircase?

Our old staircase was looking old fashioned and did not do the house justice.

Inspiration:

I had been thinking about updating the staircase for quite some time.

Decision making process:

Abbott-Wade were recommended to us by a manufacturer of bespoke turned handrails.

Style choice:

We opted for simple narrow spindles and turned walnut handrail. The whole staircase now looks lovely and has really made the hallway.

End Result:

The process was efficient and once the handrail was ready, the whole thing was completed in a week which was impressive as there were actually three staircases involved. The follow up service to ensure everything was perfect was excellent with very fine attention to detail.

New oak flight with modern twisted spindles

Mr Holliday, Bolton, Lancashire

Why a new staircase?

We’d moved into our new house and the first thing you were presented with was an old, open tread staircase straight out of 1974. It wasn’t fit for purpose and didn’t meet current building regulations, most importantly we didn’t feel it was safe for our young children as there were large gaps between the ranch rails and treads.

Inspiration:

As soon as we moved in we knew it had to go. The treads were so narrow I couldn’t fit my full foot on. It needed to be practical and safe for our children. We liked glass but didn’t want the problem of little fingerprints everywhere and decided that oak spindles would be our preferred choice.

Decision making process:

We looked online and found several staircase companies, all of whom wanted to renovate our existing stairs and retain the same structure which defeated our primary reasons for the change. Only Abbott-Wade were able to offer a complete new flight which not only turned out to be the best option for us, but the cheapest one too!

Style choice:

We needed a ‘proper’, carpeted staircase, not just for my large feet but because they are the first thing you see when you walk into the large hallway. We talked though the various options with Janet who suggested we consider the twisted oak spindles – it was absolutely the right option. We’d also seen a feature step in a friend’s house and Janet designed a stylish flourish for the foot of our stairs which we love.

End Result:

We’re not ‘staircase people’ and needed expert advice, fortunately Janet was great; helpful, knowledgeable and offered suggestions which suited our needs. The outcome is truly delightful! We have achieved the safe, practical staircase we desired with the benefit of being aesthetically perfect.

Stop chamfered oak spindles

Mr Morris, Lancashire

Why a new staircase?

Our old staircase was looking tired and uninviting when people came through the front door. We’d invested a lot and time and money in bringing the rest of our home up to a high standard and our staircase was completely letting down the rest of the house.

Inspiration:

We’d had oak doors installed and it was important for us to maintain the theme throughout the house. We liked the elegance of traditional spindles but knew that a turned style would not be in keeping with the modern styling we had chosen.

Decision making process:

Abbott-Wade had been recommended to us but we still decided to contact other companies to make sure the quote was competitive, which it was. After meeting with the designer, our mind was made up. It was clear that they shared our vision and were able to answer all of our questions. The prefinished service was also a deciding factor for us as we have young children and it was important that mess and disruption was kept to a minimum.

Style choice:

We’d looked though the style magazines and wanted a contemporary style which wouldn’t date, so the stop chamfered spindles were the obvious choice.

End Result:

The final result is fantastic. It’s now been several years since the installation was completed and the staircase still looks fresh and has aged better than us. We’ve since recommended Abbott-Wade to other friends and colleagues who have been equally as impressed with their service.

Traditional oak turned spindles

Jenny & Luke Johnson, Buxton, Derbyshire

Why a new staircase?

We really didn’t like the old one; it was dilapidated, dark and in need of an overhaul. We had renovated the rest of the house but needed to bring the staircase up to scratch too.

Inspiration:

A friend of ours had had a new staircase and we liked the look and freshness of it.

Decision making process:

We obtained a few quotes however Abbott-Wade were the most flexible and open to ideas. They offered a larger range of styles and overall we just felt happier and more confident in their ability to do a good job.

Style choice:

We knew we wanted a traditional style but with less detail than most turned spindles we’d seen. It was also important that it matched the age and style of our home. We both loved the look and feel of oak having already got pieces of oak furniture in our house.

End Result:

We are delighted with the end result. It looks and feels extremely tactile and much more light is now able to reach the stairwell.

Brown After 1

Oak fluted spindles

Andrew & Gemma Brown, Crewe, Cheshire

Why a new staircase?

We wanted something modern to suit the house but a design that would create a statement piece as you came in.

Inspiration:

We always wanted a feature staircase and researched options on-line including Abbott-Wade’s website.

Decision making process:

We opted for Abbott-Wade as we really liked the quality of the samples they provided.

Style choice:

We initially thought about wrought iron but settled on an all wood finish. We wanted oak and loved the fluted spindle design which was timeless and elegant.

End Result:

Brilliant, we are so pleased. It’s created a real statement piece in the heart of our home.

Sapele with painted turned spindles

David & Jill Ball, St.Helens, Merseyside

Why a new staircase?

The old staircase wasn’t safe enough for small children. It also looked cold with so much metal.

Inspiration:

We knew we wanted a grand ‘statement’ staircase to match our big hallway.

Decision making process:

Abbott-Wade had done jobs for our family in the past so came highly recommended. We did receive cheaper quotes however they couldn’t do exactly what Abbott-Wade were able to offer. It was nice to have the peace of mind that they would do a good job.

Style choice:

We needed the staircase to look homely, yet grand, so opted for a contrast of white against dark wood. It had to suit the house and not look too modern. The chunky handrail posts and spindles added to the grandeur.

End Result:

We love it! It sets the house off beautifully and is the first thing everyone comments on. We would not hesitate to recommend.
