Renovated Staircase in oak with clamped glass balustrade

Mr & Mrs Wright, Liverpool

Why a new staircase?

Our hall and stairs were looking dark and dated and certainly not giving a good impression when walking into our home. A fabulous job done by Abbott-Wade now gives us a light and modern look and most definitely the wow factor! Certainly no more embarrassment feelings on inviting people into our home – in fact we drag them in now to show it off!

Inspiration:

We had been updating the whole house; the hall and stairs were our last project – our weakest link. We spent a lot of time looking through pictures. We knew we wanted a bright look.

Decision making process:

We spoke to several companies, including Abbott-Wade. They weren’t the cheapest company, but nor were they the most expensive. What we liked was their attitude and passion. And with them being a family run business meant they cared. At the end of the day this is our home!

Style choice:

We chose the oak and glass design. Working together it has transformed our hallway, bringing in plenty of light, and definitely making it so much more welcoming.

End Result:

We are absolutely delighted with our new look staircase. We most definitely have the wow factor! The boys were clean and efficient over the two days it took. From start to finish the whole team were helpful and kept us informed throughout the whole process, which resulted in a calm environment for us!

A clamped glass staircase renovation in oak

Mr & Mrs Finch, Warrington

Why a new staircase?

Our old staircase was a traditional but utilitarian structure. With white painted rails and banisters, it did not provide a focal point to a predominantly oak entrance hallway. With three levels is was featureless and a little overpowering.

Inspiration:

A number of magazines and advertisements had crystallised our thinking of having an oak and glass staircase.

Decision making process:

We had 2 visits from suppliers but although Abbott-Wade was not the cheaper, they inspired more confidence. The design process was uncomplicated with helpful suggestions on the best solution for different sections of the twists and turns of the stairwells.

Style choice:

We had a clear view of the oak and glass we were after, and were shown examples of it. The selection process was quick and easy.

End Result:

A very efficient team took less than 4 days to remove the old staircase and fully install the new one. No damage was made to the decoration and everything was tidied up and rubbish removed by the time of completion. Within a week following this, we had new carpeting installed and the whole area had been transformed. The stair case is now a feature of the house and we are delighted with the result.”

“The Abbott-Wade staff were so helpful throughout the whole process. All the staff were very friendly and helpful at every stage. They even noticed a tiny fault on one piece of the glass and had a replacement on order before we even knew there was a problem. I would certainly highly recommend the company and their product to anyone who asked me.”

Why a new staircase?

Having had a new front extension which removed a wall adjacent to part of the staircase it was an excellent opportunity to create a feature in the enlarged hall.

Inspiration:

We spent a long time mulling over what we could do to turn a staircase into a feature that made an impression.

Decision making process:

We did see lots of examples, including Abbott-Wade, in various magazines. One deciding factor was a recommendation from a friend who had work done by Abbott-Wade a couple of years ago.

Style choice:

We had decided that we wanted the space to be open and light and chose glass panels. It was in discussion with Abbott-Wade that the finer details of the Oak features were agreed. They took time to talk through the detail about the steps, the posts and handrails. Their attention to detail was excellent. It has worked really well and has achieved all we wanted and more!

End Result:

It looks wonderful and we are really pleased with it. We have now finished it off with white painted risers and carpeted treads which look amazing with the oak. It has had a great reaction from family and friends who have seen it.

Open Tread stairs with Glass Spindles

Mr & Mrs Mansfield, Guilford, Surrey

Why a new staircase?

We had no stairs as we lived in a bungalow, but needed a staircase as we wanted to build 2 more bedrooms in the loft space.

Inspiration:

Desperation.  We needed more space.  A loft conversion was the trigger for us to search for a staircase and we were attracted by Abbott-Wade’s advert.

Decision making process:

Abbott-Wade had a choice of designs that was far superior to others and were sympathetic to a difficult placing of the staircase.

Style choice:

We chose an oak floating staircase with glass spindles and glass supports. It was the individual spindles that set the whole staircase in a class of its own.

End Result:

The spindles sparkle in the sunshine and by evening lamplight.    The access to two more rooms and a bathroom is way beyond our expectations.

Embedded glass & oak staircase & walkway

Mr & Mrs Bennett, Warwick, Warwickshire

Why a new staircase?

We felt that the Edwardian style of the staircase did not fit with the barn. Although the barn is old, we felt a contemporary staircase would really provide the wow factor in the large entrance hall.

Inspiration:

We were certain this would make a big difference and prioritised it over other renovations to the barn after seeing Abbott-Wade’s advertisment in Ideal Home.

Decision making process:

We selected Abbott-Wade as the service was friendly and professional from the very first call. Peter, our salesman was not pushy and did not try and talk us up on the job at all. He clearly provided all the relevant details and presented the options well which enabled us to make a clear choice.

Style choice:

We chose clear embedded glass with oak handrails and baserails. We felt this would really open up the hallway and also allow us to see right through to the countryside beyond the house from the front driveway.

End Result:

It looks amazing and has surpassed our expectations. We love it! The fitters were brilliant, tidy, friendly and worked so hard to complete the job in just one day. Brilliant!

illuminated hallway

Open tread oak stairs & shaped glass balustrade

Mr & Mrs Hill, Weston-Super-Mare, Dorset

Why a new staircase?

Although the original staircase was only 7 years old, it wasn’t giving us enough light into the small hallway, which was dark and dull looking. We felt if we opened it up by utilising light and space it would enhance the aesthetics giving the hallway grace, elegance and sophistication also more light and airiness.

Decision making process:

The reason why we selected Abbott-Wade was the overall quality of the American Oak and glasswork. It was customised to suit our needs, using the mix and match materials and components from their pattern book. An Abbott-Wade staircase suited our budget, after exploring for over a year with other companies, we chose the right company for us.

Style choice:

We selected an open tread staircase with a glass side panel, for light and openness. The renovation work was done with a high degree of professional workmanship, each detail was perfection ran by a team of 8 including the salesperson, surveyor, fitters and office staff. Yes, it really did work for us, its’ just how we imagined it to be.

End Result:

The end result is incredible and far better than our expectations!! It has eye catching features like the glass balustrade which has created an illusion of more space.

It has transformed our modest hallway into an inviting space, the transformation is unbelievable. The whole process wasn’t as daunting as we thought it might have been, the guys were extremely considerate, polite, cleaned up after each day and were always conscientious to their work commitments.

We have no hesitation in highly recommending Abbott & Wade for your new staircase, you won’t be disappointed.

Polished Steel Staircase with Black Oak Tread and Glass Risers

Open tread stained oak with steel & glass

Mr Wills, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

Why a new staircase?

A new staircase was needed to complete the renovation of our house and we wanted our staircase to be a major feature in giving an additional wow factor to compliment the rest of the project turning our house into a beautiful home.

Inspiration:

Our inspiration was to design a modern striking staircase with black stained oak, open treads and glass risers complimented with glass and polished steel handrail thus allowing maximum light to penetrate our hallway area and as the natural light changes throughout the day, it performs many striking lighting effects.

Decision making process:

Abbott-Wade were chosen over their competitors because the process from design to installation is completed in-house.

Style choice:

The style we were wanting to create was modern and contemporary and for the staircase to relate to our style throughout the whole of our home.

End Result:

We have received numerous compliments (including trade) on how magnificent the staircase looks and how in keeping it is with the rest of the home. Other comments are beautiful and compliment how well made the staircase is.

We have no hesitation in recommending Abbott-Wade and have done on various occasions.

Clear glass with rounded steel clamps

Oak & glass with brushed steel round clamps

Mr Frodsham, Lancashire

Why a new staircase?

We’d had wooden spindles which had been painted several times and were in need of updating to brighten up the hallway. The spindles had also reached a point where they had a tendency to break or come loose.

Inspiration:

We’d had a picture in our mind of the kind of staircase we were looking for but weren’t entirely clear of the finer details. We needed to know what was possible and whether it was a realistic option for us.

Decision making process:

A local company had been to quote and a friend recommended Abbott-Wade. Mike came out to visit us and we clicked straight away. He listened to our ideas and, after discussing options and details, we reached a shared vision of exactly what we wanted to achieve at the end of the project.

Style choice:

We opted for oak and glass for our refurbishment. We chose brushed steel glass clamps with stop-chamfered newel posts and pyramid newel caps to add extra detail. We’ve also emphasised the extra feeling of space the glass creates by adding a mirror to the foot of the stairs with the added benefit of showing off the staircase from all angles.

End Result:

It’s been several years now since the project was completed and we remain just as delighted with the end result. There’s been no maintenance needed and the stairs still look superb.  Everyone who visits still comments on our staircase and we have recommended Abbott-Wade many times over the years. Several of our friends have since used Abbott-Wade on our recommendation and they have been equally impressed with the service, professionalism and the price they have received.

New open tread flight with glass downstands

Mr Bond, Windsor, Berkshire

Why a new staircase?

Our staircase somehow didn’t sit well with the rest of the house – the finish (mahogany stain) appeared somewhat dated, it occupied a large footprint within the hallway encompassing a good deal of wasted space, and remedial solutions were limited insofar as one cannot paint it successfully, nor strip and refinish. Cladding and stair rod replacement was one option, but one which left the basic shape intact and didn’t address the footprint issue.   Eventually we concluded that wholesale replacement of the entire staircase was likely to be the sole option that could address all the issues.

Inspiration:

We paid a visit to a manufacturer and installer of bespoke staircases and were persuaded that a redesign was not only a viable option but also would rest comfortably with the budget we had in mind. The visit also sowed the seeds that an elegant simplicity would be an attractive and timeless choice.

Decision making process:

We consulted with a number of companies, but Abbott-Wade was the sole one that not only offered the timelessness of style we were seeking, but most importantly, the only company which could satisfy our requirement for a one-stop shop capable of removing and disposing of the old staircase and fitting the new one without the involvement of several different parties.

Style choice:

We chose an oak staircase with open risers and embedded glass with stop chamfered stair rods and newel posts, the latter with simple cappings. It worked really well and is now much more in keeping with the way we’ve dressed the rest of the house.

End Result:

We’re delighted with the end result. It’s opened up the hallway and has given us much more footprint, and the openness has created a light and airy space which has transformed the entrance to the house. The entire process was free of difficulty and seamless, and completed in one and a half days with minimal collateral damage easily remedied by our decorator. We celebrated by getting a 15′ Christmas tree and placing it right up the centre of the staircase!

Should we ever move and consider changing a staircase again, Abbott-Wade will be our first point of contact.
