Some time has passed since our award winning at Wembley Stadium, a little dust has even had time to settle on our award, but while it’s business as usual at Abbott-Wade, ti’s great to reject on such a memorable occasion…

An evening at the award is always full of promise, glamour and anticipation and this was no exception. Members of the Abbott-Wade family journeyed down from our Burtonwood base down to the bright lights of London and into the national arena, Wembley Stadium where we scooped the prestigious honour of the Best Small Business in the North West at the National Family Business Awards.

Established in 1996 by close friends Craig Abbott and Mike Wade, the pair have always employed local tradesmen, taken huge pride in their roots and lived by the traits of hard work, honesty and friendliness synonymous with the region. For the pair, the accolade has been recognition for the hard work and dedication which they have poured into their business for over 20 years.

“Whatever part of the country our work takes us to, it’s always good to come home,” says director Craig Abbott. “That’s why we were thrilled to hear we’d been shortlisted to represent the North West at the National Family Business Awards and now to have won the Best Small Business in the region is a massive honour.”

There are three generations of family working at the company which includes fathers, step sons, in-laws and cousins.

“Employing family is something which people tried to steer me away from in the early days,” muses Mike. “People always told me that it would make life difficult for us but in fact the opposite has been true. The family we have working with all have a vested interest to do good a good job, their reputation is so closely linked with ours. It’s been wonderful to see family businesses such as ours and all the other finalists and winners recognised at a national level.”

The creme-de-la-creme of family businesses are entertained and the grand award ceremony

Amalia Brightley-Gillott, Awards Director for the National Family Business Awards is blown away each year by the variety and calibre of family businesses who enter the awards. “Few people realise that every time they visit their local hairdresser, stay in a boutique hotel, buy a bottle of wine, have a necklace made or buy cheese in the supermarket that they are in fact supporting passionate, dedicated families who have set up in business together. They might be hundreds of years old or new kids on the block. These awards are our chance to say ‘thank you’ and give recognition for their contribution.”

Friends, business parters, company directors, Winners!

It’s been a great accomplishment by these two local tradesmen; not just to win the award at the first time of asking but to thrive in a challenging economy. It’s been no easy road to Wembley. Like any small business they’ve had set backs and overcome hurdles. They’ve seen competitors come and go but stuck by their principles, treated their customers with respect and been committed to doing the best job they can to built a reputation which is the envy of the staircase industry.

A night to remember

“We’re very proud of the Abbott-Wade family. It’s hard work running a small business as I have witnessed first hand. Long hours, hard graft, stress and lots of sacrifices made along the way. I may be biased but if anyone deserves this recognition it’s Mike and Craig; both genuine, honest and kind hearted to the core. Well done to all the team!” – Johanna Wade
