The St Helens Star was the first place to feature an Abbott-Wade advertisement over 20 years go. Back in 1996 it felt like a big investment for our fledgling business but our local community has seen us in there ever since, even though we now have a nationwide service and can now be found in the national broadsheet newspapers.

This makes their shared celebration of our success even more meaningful as they’ve been with us right from the very beginning.

JOINERY firm Abbott Wade has scooped the honour of the Best Small Business in the North West at the National Family Business Awards.

The company – which specialises in staircases – say they have always employed local tradesmen, taken huge pride in their roots and lived by the principles of hard work, honesty and friendliness.

Established in 1996 by Craig Abbott and Mike Wade, there are three generations of family working at the company, including fathers, step sons, in-laws and cousins.

For Craig and Mike, the accolade is recognition of the hard work and dedication which they have poured into their Burtonwood-based business for over 20 years.

The Abbott Wade family were proud to pick up their award at Wembley Stadium.

Director Craig Abbott said: “We were thrilled just to hear we’d been shortlisted to represent the North West at the National Family Business Awards – and now to have won the Best Small Business in the region is a massive honour.”

He added: “Employing family is something people tried to steer me away from in the early days. People always told me that it would make life difficult for us but in fact the opposite has been true.”

After 10 years working across a number of aspects of joinery, from the installation of floors and kitchens to loft conversions and staircases in both domestic and commercial sectors, Mike and Craig identified a need for a specialist staircase company focussing on the supply, design and installation of bespoke staircase conversions.
